Full paper(The Mathematician Galileo Galilei and His Work Discorsi)

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the mathematical heritage of Galileo Galilei, the recognized Italian Renaissance mathematician, physicist, astronomer and philosopher. The contents of Galileo’s work known as Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences, which was translated into the Slovak language within a project supported by the Cultural and Educational Grant Agency of the Slovak Republic, provide clear evidence that Galileo was not only a physicist, but also a distinguished mathematician among his contemporaries, who left his mark in the history of mathematics. In addition, in this paper we deal with the relation between mathematics and physics with emphasized focus on several other great mathematicians who are generally perceived only as physicists or inventors.

Keywords: Galileo Galilei, mathematics, physics, history of mathematics.
