Abstract: This article presents a historical and analytical overview of the development of mathematics teacher education in Slovakia from the end of the 18th century to the present. It examines key institutional milestones, systemic reforms, the differentiation of teacher training paths, and the impact of the transformations after 1953 and 1989 on the structure and quality of mathematics education. The main emphasis is placed on outstanding Slovak personalities in the field of mathematics, whose scientific, pedagogical, and didactic contributions have significantly influenced the training of mathematics teachers. Personalities such as Ondrej Šedivý, Milan Hejný, Lev Bukovský, Anatolij Dvurečenskij, Stanislav Jendroľ, Daniela Velichová, Katarína Cechlárová, Ján Čižmár, Roman Frič, Michal Fečkan, and Andrej Pázman are presented as "beacons of thought and inspiration." Through comparative analysis, the study identifies common features in their approaches to mathematics, didactics, and teacher training, leading to an integral model of a high-quality mathematics teacher based on professional expertise, didactic culture, humanistic values, and ethical and communication skills. The findings highlight the lasting influence of these figures on stabilizing and raising the standards of mathematics teacher education in Slovakia and demonstrate the relevance of their legacy for current curricular reforms and discussions on teacher professionalism.
